Jared Houston Re-signs with Turbo
Turbo Surf Designs are proud to announce we have signed Jared Houston for a further 3 years as a Turbo Global Team Rider. Jared has been a valuable member of the Turbo Global Team since 2010 and the new contract will extend that partnership to beyond 5 years. Jared has developed in to one of the leading riders in the world of performance bodyboarding since joining Turbo. With a top 10 finish in the 2011 IBA World Tour and top 10 Rankings in the Riptide Peer and Reader polls, the 22 year old South African is widely respected for his powerful and refined style in all conditions.
Turbo Owner and Head Shaper Glenn Taylor added that "Turbo are excited to continue our partnership with Jared, he consistently impresses in the water and his attitude out of the water has to be admired. I have been working with Jared on his board design for over 2 years now and we have perfected a Jared Houston signature board that will be released in June 2012."
Jared stated "I am over the moon to have signed on with Turbo for another 3 years. The boards are insane and I feel they are only getting started in terms of what is to come. Their support has been key in the growth of my career to this point and I'm looking forward to building our relationship into the future. I really believe in aligning yourself with a company and I'm so psyched to be aligned with one such as Turbo Surf Designs. We have some exciting things lined up , the first of which is my signature model board which will be available from June onwards. I'm pumped on how it came out and I hope you like it too! I would like to thank Turbo for their investment and I'm looking forward to taking things to another level together."
To celebrate the announcement Turbo and Jared have released a podcast of Jared Houston in Puerto Rico. This unique podcast shows the life of Jared Houston away from the IBA World Tour.

Great Thursday and Good Friday!
Last week saw another round of solid East swell hit the East Coast, and many were on hand to take advantage of the super heavy conditions out the Island. It was super straight out there, and taking off from the peak was a bit of a gamble, but the occasional one was an epic pit! Surge was the safer option, with a large number of locals hitting it up.
Here are a few shots from the two days, thanks to Mitch Pearson, Sam Venn and Matt Viesis for the images!

IBA Box Pro goes off!
Yesterday saw the final day of the IBA Box Pro run in some large, unpredictable swell. The morning started with a revised format due to time constraints. What was meant to be a non-elimination round, round 4 was do or die in big shift barrels and bowls at the Box.
The first heat saw some crazy moves and big barrels. Jared Houston launched what was arguably the biggest move of the day, a roll off an 8ft section in the middle of the reef. He landed it, but was strangely only awarded a 6.1 which meant he just missed out on a quarter final spot.
Jones Russell hit a very large invert in the same heat, which ended up being deemed the biggest move of round 4, which bagged him a sweet $1000 from Freedom Fins, while Mark McCarthy dominated the heat.
All of the round 4 heats were tightly contested, and heat 4 saw Emerald's Ryan Hardy up against our good friends Andrew Lester and Jacob Romero, along with Alex Uranga. Romero took out the heat, while second was secured by Hardy, who avoided a scare from Lester, who boosted a massive flip and landed, only to find out that it was just after the buzzer had sounded.
As the day progressed, it became harder to find good waves, with an increasing swell and strong onshore winds. Both Mitch Rawlins and Mark McCarthy proved to be best at finding good barrels and ramps, and faced off in the final. Rawlins dominated, putting on a show for the spectators, with boosts that would normally be reserved for free-surfing sessions. McCarthy got one good score, but just couldn't find a backup wave.
Rawlins took out his first World Tour event for several years, and you could see his elation written all over his face after the final.
We now look forward to the Arica Chilean Challenge, which is always a crazy event, due to start May 18th.
